Scrapbooks for the Beginner

by Azlan Irda

First of all, what is a scrapbook? You've heard all about it on TV shows, you've read the magazine, and your friends are already on their way to creating their own personal creations. So what exactly is it and how do you get started?

The first thing you need to understand is that a scrapbook is not like a photo album or a diary, where you put in photos or notes arranged by date and time. It's more like a assortment of things that represent the 'non-eventual' aspects of your life, like dreams, goals, relationships, etc. Scrapbooking allows you to commemorate the important things in your life that otherwise wouldn't be included in an album.

There are a few things to consider before getting started on your own scrapbook. You might want to think about what kind of scrapbook you'll create. Will it be a chronological album that follows moments in your life? Or perhaps it will follow a specific theme? You may want to consider this carefully before starting on your first page. For instance, even if you have hundreds of family photos stored over the years, you might not want to include every one of them in your book. Instead, why not create a scrapbook for all the foreign places you've visited? You don't have to use every photo in your collection to make a gorgeous and meaningful scrapbook. In fact, it's even recommended to use as little pictures as possible! Don't give yourself the pressure of trying to scrapbook every picture you've got in the box. You won't be able to deal with all of them creatively and in such a way that will recreate the memories and experiences as meaningfully as you want to, so save yourself the burden.

You don't have to spend a lot of time working on your scrapbooks. I know people who complain that they would like to start scrapbooking, but they're afraid that it would take up too much of their time. This is a lot of nonsense. You can either spend 4 hours a day scrapbooking or 1 hour every weekend; it doesn't matter at all! What matters is that you are enjoying your hobby. Scrapbooking doesn't have to be a full-time job and you don't have to make a schedule for it. Leave the creative pressure behind. Don't get caught up in the decorations and the artwork that you may see in other people's scrapbooks. What really matters are the pictures and the stories contained in each page. I have heard of some people who constantly agonize about the artwork in their scrapbooks. By doing this, they are destroying what this great hobby is supposed to be about.

A lot of information can be found on the Internet about the hobby of scrapbooking. You can also find great scrapbook stores for everything you'll ever need. If you feel like you don't have the commitment or the passion to indulge in scrapbooking, don't worry about it. Remember, it is a hobby, not a job. It can be a lifelong pursuit, or just a vehicle to capture all the things that make up the real you.
