Even in the most stylish home, sometimes the bathroom gets overlooked. After
all, it is usually not the first room shown to guests. However, sprucing up
a bathroom can be done fairly easily, and the result is well worth the
effort. Not only does a fashionable bathroom give your home an air of
sophistication, it also will add value to the house.

Lighting: Sometimes the simplest things make a big difference.
For starters, you may want to get rid of the generic overhead light that
most bathrooms are equipped with. Oftentimes this lighting is stark and
unappealing.
Instead, install softer lighting that focuses on the areas that will be used
most, such as the bathtub and sink. Soft light for these areas can be
attained through wall dimmers connected to a lighting source. Sometimes a
small table lamp on the sink countertop will also do the trick. Lovely wall
sconces can be used on the sides of the mirrors as well. Another idea to
consider is placing a sink in front of a window to take advantage of the
natural light. The mirror can be put on another wall near the sink. If you
really want to class things up, try a luminous chandelier in the middle of
the ceiling to reflect light.
Before you begin remodeling, make sure to check your lighting plans with an
electrician or light specialist. The wiring should all be installed
carefully behind the walls so no cords or wires show, as this would ruin the
elegant effect.
The Sink: The hand washing area of a bathroom is perhaps the most
noticeable. The sophisticated bathroom you are creating should preferably
have two sinks. They can be placed next to each other on a long countertop,
or you can set aside a place on each side of the room for separate sinks.
That way, each person will be able to use his or her sink with plenty of
elbow room.
If you have enough floor space, another option is to install elegant
pedestal sinks. These will create a more open look for the bathroom, but
since they lack storage space, separate cabinets will also be needed.
Pedestal sinks are available in a variety of designs, both traditional and
contemporary.
Of course, no sink will look great if it is placed in a plain countertop.
Marble countertops nicely complement the shiny metal of sinks and always
provide an elegant look. The color should not stand out from the greater
scheme of the bathroom.
A trendy design in bathroom sinks features a large bowl mounted on the top
of the bathroom counter. All sorts of designs and materials are available,
including hand-blown glass, marble, gold-leafed glass, or other metals. It
is important to make sure the bowl will be at a convenient height to use if
you choose this type of sink.
Mirrors: Most bathroom Mirrors are
rather plain and austere. To fix this, swap the large, frameless mirror that
is probably in your bathroom with a striking framed mirror. It is amazing
how a finely framed mirror adds an artistic touch to the room.
Furniture: Nothing makes a bathroom feel more comfortable than
adding a well-placed piece of furniture. It could be an armoire or chest to
hold towels, or a simple bench or lounge chair to relax in. Of course, this
requires a certain amount of free space, but the furniture does not have to
be large and imposing. The idea is to add your own custom look to the
bathroom and make it look more hospitable.
Fabrics: Not to be forgotten are the fabrics that adorn every
bathroom. From upholstery to window curtains, the type of fabric chosen can
make the difference between classy and hideous. If you have toilet seat
cover, choose something soft and luxurious. Even Shower
Curtains can provide an accent of style, if it matches the fashion of
the rest of the room.
