Decorate your Bedroom with Feng Shui

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese art that is literally translated as "wind and water." In practice, this term refers to the placement of furniture and other articles in your bedroom. Using this artistic approach will help you to create a sleeping atmosphere that will leave you feeling rested and relaxed, as well as energized, when you are ready to leave your room.

What can you do to bring the peace and tranquility of this centuries-old art into your sleeping space? Begin with coordinating colors that use warm earth tones, such as pale oranges, light browns, or neutral greens. Light blue or lavender also lends a calming, relaxing atmosphere.

Next, position your bed as far away from the room’s entrance as possible. If possible, do not align the bed with the room’s entrance. According to Feng Shui, the corner of the room diagonally opposite the doorway is the best place to position your bed. In addition, avoid placing the bed under a window if possible, and use a solid wood headboard to provide additional strength and support for the sleeper’s head.

Decorators familiar with this ancient art are also quick to remind people not to position the bed so that the sleeper’s feet point toward the doorway. The ancient Chinese viewed this as the "death position," because the person who had died would be carried out of the room feet first.

Furthermore, positioning the bed is believed to drain a person’s life force, so avoid it if possible. If it is unavoidable, use a footboard or place another piece of furniture at the foot of the bed to provide a buffer. Incidentally, a footboard is believed to act as a restraint to one’s creative and energetic forces, though, so reposition the bed if at all possible.

One of the most important things you can do is to clean the clutter from your room. Extra clutter can signify unfinished business and may hinder progress in a person’s life. Keep the extra furnishings to a minimum, and don’t allow your bedroom to become disorderly. Furthermore, rid yourself of any furnishings that may carry a negative connotation, or memories of a previous relationship gone sour.

If possible, avoid keeping televisions, large numbers of books, or a cluttered desk in your sleep space. Don’t play loud music in your bedroom, and whenever possible, use symmetry in decorating. For example, place two nightstands in the room, or hang matching pictures on the wall. Decorate your room with beautiful and appealing art, but avoid family photos. This should be a space designed only for you and your partner.

Design the room so that it allows the maximum amount of natural lighting possible during the day. Use soft, warm lighting for the room at night, and position blinds and window shades so that you sleep in darkness. This helps to keep your normal bodily rhythms in synchronicity.

Don’t forget to appeal to your other sense as well. Use fragrant candles or essential oils, and decorate with fabrics that appeal to the touch. Play soft, romantic music in the background. Now, lie back, and enjoy the have of rest you’ve just created.
