Change One of the Three Main Elements of Any Room’s Decor and You Can Change the Atmosphere
and Feel of That Room – With Less Effort Than You May Think
It does not take a lot of work or energy to change the feel of any room. All that is
essentially required is to change one of the 3 main décor components to a room. If all three are changed
there can be a dramatic change to the existing feel of the room. Let’s explore these 3 components
and how you can re-create a room by addressing one or more of the 3 areas.
This is often easier and less expensive then most people initially think.
Color: One of the most popular and obvious changes involves color. This is no
secret. Color can be used to bring any number of emotions into the décor of a room. As a general
rule, dark colors give a room a sense that it is smaller and the opposite is true with lighter
shades.
When many people think about changing a room, often painting comes to mind first. This is
definitely one of the most drastic changes that can occur, but it comes with a price, particularly
inconvenience and physical effort. Rather then painting an entire room even painting one focal wall
will bring considerable change. You are not limited to changing paint in order to affect the
color of a room. Color within any given room is also defined by the furniture, accessories, art and
flooring. By simply changing one of these accents with a contrasting or complimenting color a new
look can be created with even less effort. These can include but are not limited to a lamp shade,
throw rug, wall hanging, or furniture slip covers.
Texture: This is often one area that is overlooked. You can bring life and vibrancy to
a room by layering a variety of textures. By integrating a variety of textures you can bring
depth, dimension and emotion into an otherwise potentially sterile room. A combination of
contrasting textures can include the smooth shiny surface of a black leather couch with a plump throw
blanket over the arm. Again your imagination is the limit. There are also unique products that
combine a number of textures into one item; indoor
waterfall fountains are a perfect example. An indoor fountain can incorporate the rough texture
of slate while incorporating the smooth trim of a brushed copper and the ever changing visual
effect of cascading water. Hanging a smooth surfaced mirror along side a flowing hanging curtain
also creates an obvious contrast. The struggle can come in trying to find the visual balance and
finding textures that contrast yet complement each other.
Lighting: Lighting is an incredible medium that has significant control to create an
atmosphere and ambiance within a room. There are really two aspects that affect the room’s décor in
regards to lighting. Initially the actual source of the light will bring its own feel and style
to the room. Whether the fixture is pewter / smoked glass wall sconce, a small table lava lamp, a
sparkling chandelier or an elegant floor standing lamp; each one will bring a very unique feel to
the room. There is also the actual effect that is created by the light itself. A light bar with
halogen lights can be very pin pointed to a specific location or a small wall sconce that can
release a soft glow that brings a very relaxed atmosphere. Dimmer switches provide options to change
the brightness of the room at your discretion and give diversity in your options from
illuminating the entire room to creating a soft glow. Lighting can also be used to draw attention and create
a focal point, illuminating a piece of art or other room accessory. For example, many indoor wall water fountains have
a small light at the top that illuminates the feature creating a focal point within the room.
Window coverings also affect the amount of natural light from the outdoors and play a role in the
lighting of any room.
The natural light from the flame of a candle should not be over looked. Candles are excellent
mood setters and in combination with a mirror the soft light is exemplified. Combining the
romantic glow of candles with the mist and glimmering water from a small table top fountain
creates an entirely unique effect to the room’s décor.
If you wish a particular room in your home had a different feel or ambience simply walk through
the room and evaluate the present state of each of the three areas discussed above. Then
methodically think through the countless options you have to make changes. Often many people think that
the changes need to be drastic, they think that new flooring, furniture and paint is the only
option. Change does not need to be extreme to be effective or dramatic. Creatively look at the
colors, texture and lighting within the room and explore and experiment with making changes to each of
these areas. I think you will be surprised at what some creativity will do when you apply these
simple yet profound principles.
