Organization Can Make Holiday Decorating So Much Easier!

Holiday decorating is a wonderful way of enjoying the spirit of the season. An almost entirely creative process, it lets you use your own home as a canvas, on which you can create a temporary, but shining personal interpretation of the meaning of the holiday. The only problem is that it is a lot of work, and a lot of mess! The chaos of trying to keep track of all of those decorative accessories, the various ornaments, the plaques, and the statues, can rob the experience of a lot of its joy.

Luckily there is a solution. Organization, that simple old trick, can work wonders to tame the wild windstorm of holiday décor.

Now I know that a lot of people out there are resistant to organizational moves. They feel like it constrains them, like it limits their creativity. They also fear that they will end up spending all of their time organizing, instead of actually getting into the nitty gritty creative decorating work.

However the truth is a far different story. In reality, organization is not a constraint; it is actually a way of freeing up more time, so that you can be creative. When you no longer have to worry about the mess, the chaos, searching endlessly through unmarked piles of stuff, you will actually be able to enjoy the experience, and have time to enjoy the company of those that are helping you.

The beginning of holiday organization is the end of the holiday, when it is time to clean up. This is when you can decide to form a new plan, and look ahead to next year’s experience, rather than just focusing on shoving everything quickly into a box.

As you put your various decorations away, sort them into boxes of similar items. All tree ornaments should go in one box, while all decorative blankets and throws, and cloth products should go in another. If you have doubles of anything pack them up together, and next year you will be able to open one box, decide between the two, and then close the box up with the unneeded item safely tucked away.

As you close up the boxes, be sure to clearly label everything. This will help tremendously next year, when you go to extract these items again. It will also help in putting the boxes themselves away, as you will be able to clearly see which boxes contain fragile pieces, and can put them on top of other boxes with sturdier materials inside. You may also want to consider clear plastic bins, which will hold up better than cardboard, and which allow you to see what is inside of them, without having to even open them up.

A hidden benefit to having everything neatly tucked away and labeled, is that you can come back at any point during the year and look at exactly what the building blocks of your holiday decorating scheme are. You will be able to see that the paper goods are over there, and the table ware is over there, and the box with the big lawn signs is on the bottom. Being able to visually perceive these various accessories, will allow you to think theoretically about what you want to do for next years round of holiday decorating.

Decorating your home for the seasonal holidays is an extremely rewarding artistic endeavor, in which you actually interpret the spirit of the season through the appearance of your home. However it is also a chaotic and difficult experience, which can quickly turn into a clutter filled nightmare. A few common sense organizational gestures can do wonders towards calming down the process, and freeing up more time for you to actually enjoy it, and the people around you.
